John Mellencamp once said, “Unemployment is skyrocketing; deflation is in our future for the first time since the Great Depression.” Although many people deny it, unemployment is a large problem in the U.S., and is a bad thing to have happen. This is because many people do not have jobs, and it has negative psychological effects on citizens and families.

I believe that unemployment is a MAJOR issue in the United States of America, It has very greatly affected the country, because the less Americans that have jobs, the less money the government gets from income taxes. Taxes may not seem beneficial, but, they pay for community schools, libraries, roads, and much more. It also affects the unemployed citizens, because they don’t get an income, and therefore cannot support themselves. Therefore, unemployment is not only a depressingly common issue in the U.S.A., but it is also a terrible thing to have happen in this country.

Another reason that unemployment is a terrible issue in the United States, is that unemployment has many negative psychological effects on citizens and families. According to the American Psychological Association, unemployed individuals are twice as likely as individuals who are employed to suffer from depression, anxiety, psychosomatic symptoms, low sense of well-being, and poor self-esteem. Having unemployment in this country is not beneficial at all to our growth and development.

Overall, unemployment is a major issue in the United States, and is a terrible thing to happen. Current unemployment levels are record-breakingly high right now, and that is terrible. I have learned that if people don’t have jobs, it isn’t just awful for them; it’s awful for all of us.

John Mellencamp once voiced, “Unemployment is skyrocketing; deflation is in our future for the first time since the Great Depression.” While some people are out working, many other Americans are struggling to find a sustaining  job, or keep one. Unemployment is a major economic problem affecting our scene on both national, and personal levels.

CNN supports that unemployment in the U.S is a major problem.  According to the Labor Department, the economy in the U.S. only added 38,000 jobs in May, which was the worst monthly job gain since 2010. There were only about 4.2 million people with part time jobs before the recession. The 10% unemployment rate that hit in October 2009, right after the recession, is higher than today’s unemployment rate. This year, for three straight months, job gains have declined. In May, healthcare, hotels, and government added jobs. However, 15,000 construction jobs were lost and 10,000 manufacturing jobs disappeared as well.

Unemployment has affected many Texans, including myself. While my parents work hard everyday, they fret on how they have a possibility of losing their jobs. With the unemployment rate incredibly high, anyone working has a possibility of losing their job in an instant, and if they do lose their jobs, it will be extremely difficult to find a new one. If my parents lose their jobs, my family could lose nearly everything, and would struggle with income.

Out of many major problems in the United States, unemployment is one of the largest issues. Unemployment has been a struggle for many years, and still is. I agree with Mellencamp, for unemployment is rising, and deflation is soon to become.
